A business is identified by an icon in its simplest form; i.e. logo. Logos help to identify certain product, not to explain it. Effective logo design helps in promoting instant public recognition.

Arabic typography is the artistic practice of calligraphy in Arabic language which involves the interplay and arrangement of various forms of letters and curves. The pure complexity of the Arabic script is amazing; and it is kind of unfortunate that it is largely ignored outside the Middle East. I find the arabesque based designs very beautiful and free-flowing which visually represent a great piece of art even if you can’t read the text. More and more International brands are looking for ways to adapt their corporate identity to suit the International market including the Arabic audiences.

The Importance of a Logos 

Logo designs trigger the company’s identity in the global market. People recognize and react to color, shapes, lines, fonts and other symbolic forms with emotions tied to their experiences. Popular logos are also identifiable in other languages.

Designing Arabic logos for a larger audience (local as well as the International community) is a challenge in itself because Arabic text is read from right to left unlike the English text which is read from left to right; and one has to incorporate both of the languages in a single design. The design needs to hold a unique balance which allows both languages to work together in harmony. In this post, I have hand-picked some Arabic based logos from various designers. Based on my knowledge of the Arabic language, I have also provided comments on the designs where necessary.

What is Corporate Identity?

Corporate Identity is a physical expression of the company’s brand, by which it makes itself distinct through the image it presents itself to the world using collaterals such as business cards, letterheads, brochures and other stationary items. A corporate identity is, put simply, a symbol. It can be as simple as a color scheme or a word written a certain way. or a picture. These physical images are often associated with the “image” of the company behind them. They are often designed with a certain motive. User Friendly for AOL, Sleek and High Tech for Sony, and Manly and Sturdy for Old Spice.

This is the basic idea of a corporate identity. When you see those images, not much else comes to mind. There are well recognized and those color schemes, images, and words have been effectively used to bring those particular companies to mind.

The Importance of Corporate Identity

Corporate identity facilitates recognition of company brand. Why do corporate identities work? Why does 3 stripes and a word make us want to trust a company to sell us shoes? The answer is because it is effectively marketed. The image is unique enough to know that it is Adidas, but not overly blatant or complex. The question, though, is what makes for a good and effective corporate identity?

First, it has to be recognizable enough to saturate a market. Something hard to make out, fuzzy, too long, unmemorable, ordinary, or too similar to other identities in that market just won’t do the trick. Here are a few things you should think of: is it legible? Can it be recognized from a little distance? Will it stand out on a page? Does it put forth the kind of image you want? Does it look good in black and white? (you might not always want to pay for color) Can you legally protect it? Is it simple? The more complicated it gets, the larger it will have to be to be recognizable. Your logo can find its way on to a box, or onto a letterhead, or maybe onto a billboard. Can it be seen and understood from all these perspectives?

Do you have a slogan for your product or brand name? How does it match up? Is it memorable, simple, expressive and does it carry the image you want to send? These are all parts of an effective corporate identity. And they very well might make or break your marketing strategy.
